Dental Crowns & Bridges
When a tooth has a very large existing filling that is wearing down, or if a larger fracture of a tooth occurs, replacement with a new filling may not be feasible. The new filling will be highly susceptible to fracturing again due to the lack of tooth structure to hold the filling in. This often occurs in back teeth where the forces of biting are the strongest. In this case, a crown ("cap") may be a better option.
The crown is made of a white-colored zirconia material, which is highly durable and strong, and protects your tooth for the long-term.
A dental bridge is similar to a crown, except that it is performed to replace a missing tooth in the mouth. Typically, there needs to be a strong tooth on both sides of the missing space to perform this. In the case where two teeth are supporting one missing tooth, this is called a "3-unit bridge."
